Vizsla Dogs

1. What is nosework?

Nosework is a fun and mentally stimulating scent detection sport where dogs learn to locate specific target odors in different environments. Inspired by working detection dogs, nosework is open to all breeds and skill levels—and it’s just as rewarding for pet dogs as it is for competitors.

2. Do I need to compete to enjoy nosework?

Not at all! Many people train in nosework for the enrichment and fun. It builds confidence, focus, and a stronger bond with your dog—even if you never step foot in a trial.

3. What organizations do you support for competition?

We support:

  • NACSW (National Association of Canine Scent Work) – the original civilian sport organization, with clear progression from ORTs to Elite.

  • AKC (American Kennel Club Scent Work)

  • ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) – a growing scent work venue

We’ll help you prepare for whichever path fits your team best.

4. What odors are used in these venues?

Each organization uses essential oil-based odors:

  • NACSW: Birch, Anise, and Clove

  • AKC: Birch, Anise, Clove, Cypress

  • ASCA: Birch, Anise, and Clove
We introduce these odors based on your experience level and trial goals.

5. What’s the first step toward competition?

Most venues begin with an odor recognition test (ORT) or Novice-level searches. We offer training for:

  • NACSW ORTs, NW1, NW2, NW3, and Elite trials

  • AKC Novice through Master-level classes

  • ASCA scent divisions
We’ll help you understand each organization’s requirements and get you ready when your team is confident and consistent.

6. What if I’m not interested in competing?

That’s totally fine! Many of our students enjoy nosework for the mental exercise and enrichment. It’s a great outlet for anxious, senior, or high-energy dogs—and it doesn’t require any obedience background.

7. My dog is reactive or shy—can we still participate?

Yes. Nosework is one of the most inclusive sports for dogs with big feelings. Dogs work individually, and we structure classes with distance, safety, and support in mind. Just let us know your dog’s needs—we’ve got you.

8. What should I bring to class?

Please bring:

  • A 6 -15 ft leash (prefer no retractables)

  • High-value treats or a toy

  • Crate for rest time

  • Water for your dog
We’ll provide all odor and search materials.

9. How are classes structured?

Each dog works one at a time, with instruction before and feedback after. You’ll learn how to:

  • Build strong odor obedience

  • Read your dog’s changes of behavior

  • Handle different search elements: containers, interiors, exteriors, vehicles
We rotate venues and challenges to mimic NACSW, AKC, and ASCA trial conditions.

10. Do you offer mock trials or trial prep?

Yes! We run:

  • NACSW-style ORT prep and Trial simulation searches

  • AKC Novice–Advanced walkthroughs

  • ASCA format familiarization

  • Rule reviews, search strategy coaching, and confidence-building for handlers

11. Can kids or families join?

Definitely. Nosework is a great family activity, and kids often make excellent handlers. We encourage family participation, especially in our beginner and fun-focused classes.

12. What if I want private lessons?

We offer 1:1 coaching for new teams, competition prep, or behavioral support. Great for dogs who need more space or handlers who prefer customized sessions.

13. How do I get started?

Reach out to us! We’ll guide you into the right class, seminar, or private lesson based on your goals. Whether you're just sniffing it out or aiming for Elite, we’re here to help.
